Con Portellos and his wife built the property in 2019. Having lived in Burnside, he says the decision to build at Toorak Gardens was not long in coming.
“It’s a fantastic region,” says Portellos. “We walk everywhere. We can walk to Dulwich, Burnside, you can even walk into town through the parks and we cycle everywhere. We lived in Burnside and then decided to build this place, so we rented our place in Burnside. When we built a new place to move in, we always wanted it to be in the eastern suburbs. We are truly spoiled here as it is such a fantastic place.”
The couple set out to create a modern home that would stand out from the crowd, but not so modern that it would quickly go out of style and soon be out of fashion. They wanted something that would be as sought after by future generations as they are today’s buyers.
“We built a modern classic house and I wanted a substantial house and I wanted it to be a quality build, and I think we did it really well and created something that will stand the test of time. “said Mr. Portellos. “It was important to me that it fit in with the area and respect its location while still being beautiful and exciting. It’s a really solid build and the quality is amazing.
“It really looks great and we’ve built it in a style that will always be in demand. It has a real contemporary look without looking hastily made and looking like every other house. What’s the Interest in living in the same house as one in two other people?I like to have something a little more unique and a little more bespoke.
“We didn’t cut anywhere. With the roof we could have saved some money and put Colorbond up there but we went with tiles because we really wanted that high end look. Because we only built it in 2019, everything is still pretty much new.
“We have built several houses in the past and we worked very hard to make sure everything was in its place. I’m incredibly difficult, to the point of being almost difficult. It’s my ethnic side that stands out. Everything must be fine. »
The two-story house has four bedrooms. One of them is on the lower level, while the other three are upstairs. The master sits forward, opening to a balcony through two sets of French doors, and has a walk-in closet and bathroom. A living space is nearby and a family bathroom serves the minor bedrooms.
On the ground floor you will find a second bathroom, a home office and a spacious open kitchen, dining room and living room opening onto two terraces, one of which has an outdoor kitchen.
“There are only two of us here, and normally we would be big entertainers, but unfortunately Covid has stopped us from having really big parties here, but there is certainly plenty of space for those looking to do so,” said Mr. Portellos. “It’s an artist’s dream because there’s so much space. We like to sit upstairs in the retreat and watch big screen TV up there because it’s cozy, and outside you have this fantastic BBQ area and you can have everyone with a drink of wine and it is simply fabulous. The boys can be outside by the barbecue having a beer while the women sit on the other side waiting for the food to be ready. It works really well. Our friends really love it.
As the couple now return to their Burnside home, Mr Portellos says the time has come for someone else to enjoy it as much as they do.
“It would be fantastic for a family because there’s plenty of space for everyone and enough living space for people to really spread out,” he says.
“If you had a teenager who drove, he could live in the downstairs bedroom and come and go as he pleases.
“It would really also be fantastic for professionals with visitors from the motorway, and it could also be great for a multi-generational family where you have the grandparents downstairs and the rest of the family upstairs. It’s very versatile. We loved living here, and whoever will buy it will too. We’re just looking for that locked down lifestyle so we can start traveling in Greece again, and our other place will allow us to do that.
