Location changed for Monday night Bend Open House on Unauthorized Camping Code

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The City of Bend’s Campground Code Process Information Open House has moved due to the active investigation into Sunday’s shooting at the Eastside Safeway in Bend.

The informational open house, originally scheduled for the Municipal Court, will now take place tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall (710 NW Wall Street). It will also be available online.

“I think it’s important to move forward with this event,” Pro-Tem Mayor Anthony Broadman said. “We can recognize the moment and focus on the constructive work that we need to do as a community.”

The City of Bend is developing municipal code provisions to regulate unauthorized camping on city rights-of-way and city-owned property, such as public streets, sidewalks, and landscaped strips in Bend. As part of the development of the code, the City is hosting two information sessions this month on the code development process.

The first Open House took place on August 16 and the second will take place tonight in person and online. The online meeting will be available with simultaneous live Spanish interpretation. The event will be streamed on City of Bend YouTube Channel. Those wishing to ask questions during the open house should register with this Zoom link.

The purpose of the open house is to educate the community on how developing an unauthorized camping code fits into the city and community’s response to homelessness. City staff will share information on the legal principles involved in regulating public property in light of recent Federal Court decisions and Oregon statutes, as well as the code development process, including including when members of the community will have the opportunity to give their opinion. The open house gives community members time to ask questions about this process.

About Unauthorized Camping Code

Unauthorized camping along City streets and sidewalks is the type of camping the City hears a lot about. Bend’s municipal code does not currently prohibit camping on public property or rights-of-way. The City of Bend is developing a code to help regulate city-owned properties and rights-of-way to make them safer for all and intends to regulate unauthorized camping in a manner consistent with court rulings. federal and Oregon law. The community will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed code before Council votes on adopting a code this fall.
