Cairns cafe manager reveals how A-listers’ hosting story went global

The manager of a Cairns cafe who claimed Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend Pete Davidson visited the establishment described the incident and the resulting media frenzy as a ‘joke that backfired’ .

Matt Black, who runs the Botanica Cafe Bar Kitchen in Edge Hill, was quoted yesterday in an ABC article about the supposed visit.

The article was taken down by national television today after it was reported that Kim Kardashian wasn’t even in Australia.

Mr Black said Tropic now he’s well known locally for being a trickster, but he didn’t realize his latest prank would explode the way it did.

He said it all started when he posted a comment on Tropic Now’s Facebook page about the famous couple having breakfast at his establishment.

“I’m a larrikin, I just do these things,” he said.

“People who know me know I stir things up on social media.

“I thought people were going to call me.

“Next thing, the Cairns Post is trying to get a story, all day the phone hasn’t stopped ringing – the LA Times, the New York reporters, everyone’s trying to get that scoop on their attendance in this little cafe on Edge Hill.

“It got to the point where I thought I had to answer the phone and give someone something.

“The next call was ABC Radio and I said I’d give them the scoop.

“Effectively, it just exploded even more.”
