ImageThe principles of Feng Shui can be applied to travel, for business or vacation purposes, to ensure the most auspicious circumstances abound during the trip. Obviously, one cannot control one's environment nor the people in it, but there are a few things that can be done to make the most of any situation.

The Home

Feng shui - the ancient Chinese art to increase the flow of positive energy ("chi") in any environment. "Feng shui" literally translated means "wind and water", elements that represent positive movement and flow. Feng shui can be used not only to promote positive energy in your home or office, but also on a vacation or business trip.

The first thing to remember is to leave both home and office in an organised manner. If you leave them in chaos, you will attract the same energy during your vacation, which can manifest itself as problems with hotel rooms and reservations, airline connections, car rentals, etc.

Make sure that your home, particularly the kitchen, is tidy by disposing of leftovers and garbage, but leave cupboards stocked with food to create a feeling of abundance on your return. Make sure that someone can take care of plants, open curtains and blinds on the day of your return, and place some air fresheners around the home.

A few essentials to pack in your suitcase are a compass, details of your own best directions, incense or oil with burner and a small spray bottle for water. To minimize the stress that results from a change in environment, take pictures of your home and family and favorite scents with you, such as a scented candle or incense. Try taking some scarves or small throws to brighten up your hotel room, and then use these to hang over the TV and mirror before going to sleep, and over sharp corners of night tables and dressers, all of which can disrupt the flow of chi.

Feng shui is also important for a smooth transition when you return from a trip, and the first thing to do is open the windows to let in fresh chi. Soft music and walking around every room in the home also helps to create a positive flow of energy. Think positive thoughts. Unpacking right away gives a fresh start and brings in the new energy gathered on vacation, reminders of the trip can be placed in the south area of the living room. Making water run again by taking a shower will help the flow of chi, and lavender soap is particularly effective in washing away the stress of traveling. You should also use the stove on the day of your return, even if its just to boil the kettle for a cup of tea. Finally, use the positive energy acquired on vacation to think about the coming months.

The Hotel

Feng shui can also be used when choosing a hotel - front entrance at the left side of the property ensures good advice about things to do and see, a centered door is good for business travel, but for a vacation, the best place for the front door is on the far right side. Ideally, the concierge should be facing the front door to ensure a warm reception, and hotel rooms should open onto a corridor rather than directly to the outside.

Ideally, you should select a hotel room on the side of the hotel to suit your own best direction, but there are a few things you can do in the room also to enhance your energy. If possible, open the windows of your hotel room on arrival to let in fresh air. Just by getting the air moving is a great way to increase the chi in your new environment. The compass will help you decide if it is possible/necessary to reposition the bed, allowing for your head to face your best direction. The incense/oil and water will help to cleanse previous guests' energy from the room, and you may wish to open the windows to assist in this regard. Clapping your hands or ringing bells will also help to cleanse the room.

If the bed faces the bathroom, you should keep the door closed at all times, and if there is a mirror facing the bed, you should cover it at night to ensure restful sleep. Switch off and unplug as many of the electrical wires/cables behind the bed as possible when you are ready to go to sleep. Ideally, the telephone and alarm clock should be placed on the floor.

The bed should not be in direct line with the door, and the bathroom should not be at the far left or far right corner of the room. If you are spending more than one night in the room, a pleasant view is important. In feng shui, higher rooms are better as there is less weight on top of you. It is important to feel comfortable, relaxed and welcomed the moment you enter the hotel.

Most hotel chains use the same floor plans repeatedly throughout their hotels, so if you are comfortable in one, you will probably be comfortable in another in a different location.

Business

For business meetings, wherever possible, try to face one of your best directions, and this includes meetings held in restaurants or places other than an office. Try not to sit with a door or window at your back - a solid wall is best. If you can, try to position those you are meeting with in vulnerable positions, such as with their back to a window or door.

General

The electromagnetic energy fields in airports can be extremely debilitating, and drain our bodies of chi, resulting in headaches, irritability, depression and insomnia. Jet lag and time zones only compound this. There are affordable and effective devices available for less than US$20.00 that prevent jet lag completely.

Feng shui has a great impact on our food, from how it was produced and cooked, to our mood when we eat it. Since we receive energy through food, it is directly related to the flow of our energy. Feng shui recommends that a dish should contain different colors which are in harmony and balanced with each other. A balance of flavours is also required, some strong and some delicate. The smell of the food is also important and must be pleasing to you.

Applying these simple principles while you travel will ensure that your energy is optimized creating the most positive influences for your trip.
