Travel Tip of the Day!

Copy all credit cards, airline tickets, passports and important documents, front and back. Jewelry, luggage and all valuables should be photographed prior to travel. Install motion lights in the front and rear of your house. Do not put your name on mailboxes, etc. Buy electronic timers that turn lights and TV on and off at different times.

Hydration
Remember that it is very important to stay well hydrated in the tropics. Bottled water is easily obtainable in the islands. Juices and coconut water will provide a little variety if needed. If you do get dehydrated, suitable sachets of containing the necessary minerals can be purchased in drug stores.
Sunscreen
ImageIt goes without saying that even on a cloudy day, sunscreen is essential, and should be applied frequently. A hat is also a good idea. Not only is sunburn very uncomfortable, it is very damaging to the skin. Sunstroke is also most unpleasant - why take time out of your hard earned vacation to spend part of it in bed feeling like death.
Clothing
Don't wear black if you are out in the middle of the day as it will attract the heat of the sun and make you feel even hotter. Try to stick to natural fabrics such as cottons and linens.
Mosquitos & Sandflies
ImageThese critters come out in the late afternoon and early evening, but will congregate in any dark place during the day (like under a table). Sandflies are tiny so you will probably never actually see them, but though harmless they pack a mighty punch. There are several products available for topical application. Since you probably will be bitten by these nuisance insects, a product to take out the itch might be a good idea, such as citronella oil. Any drug store will be able to advise you of suitable products. Covering up with long sleeves and trousers is another alternative.
Centipede Bites
It is unlikely that you will come across any of these, but if you do get bitten by one, it will be very painful but not dangerous. Any antihistamine cream will help take the sting out.
Jelly Fish
Should you be unfortunate enough to be stung by a jelly fish, the application of vinegar will give instant relief. If you experience difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention.
Sea Urchins
Stepping on a sea urchin can be particularly unpleasant. Candle grease (not candle wax) does a good job of drawing out the spines though several applications may be required.
Manchineal Trees
ImageThese are found on many beaches and appear to be wonderful shade trees. However, they are quite poisonous. The fruit look like small green apples and should not be touched. Even sheltering from rain under a manchineal tree can cause blistering of the skin. Most trees are sign posted in some way as being dangerous - perhaps with a red band or cross on the trunk.
Coconut Palm Trees
Do not sit or park your vehicle under these trees unless they have been cleaned of coconuts. Coconuts do fall out of the trees and can leave a nasty dent in either your head or your car.
